SUMMARY

Manages interactions with the news media on behalf of the Spectrum Health system. Uses a variety of mediums to communicate news and information including news releases, pitches, video and audio. Proactively works with internal clients and executives to identify potential stories and presents them to the media. Responds to reporter inquiries and interviews. Coordinates press conferences and other media-related events. Participates in developing media relations strategies related to issues management and crisis communications.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or Public Relations or equivalent combination of education and experience; Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) preferred
  • 10 years related experience, including 3+ years experience in communications consulting and 3+ years experience in leadership
  • Demonstrated experience and results in working with print and electronic media
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing strategic communications and marketing plans incorporating business goals and objectives, in consultation and collaboration with clients
  • Demonstrated track record in reputation crisis, and disaster communications planning and execution
  • Background in health care communications, preferably with a large health care system

Proven effective use of various computer software programs such as PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Microsoft Project, Visio, Outlook, Adobe Writer, and Web proficiency.  Strong team and client focus including ability to collaborate and appropriately balance interests of all parties. Ability to translate information / knowledge in a manner that is understandable to end user. Strong organizational and project management skills, with the demonstrated ability to achieve goals and objectives.

Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.  Time management and organizational skills.  Self directed.  Ability to make quality, independent decisions.  Analytical and strong problem solving skills.  Able to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes and multiple interruptions.  Ability to maintain the strictest levels of confidentiality.
