New Member Profile: Carl Apple of the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids

Carl Apple, Director of Communications for the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids 1. Where do you work and what is your title?

Carl Apple Director of Communications Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids

2. What is your main objective in that role?

I want people in West Michigan, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, to see the good things that are happening in the Catholic community. With an organization that includes 85 parishes and more than 30 schools, it may be easy to lose sight of the charity, diversity, education and compassion that are shown by tens of thousands in just about every part of our diocese. It's my goal to work with clergy, educators, staff, and volunteers to use our resources to reinvigorate the faithful and perhaps convince others to embrace the hope and love of our faith.

3. What PRSA benefit do you find the most value in?

As a former broadcaster, I always enjoyed the opportunity to see the work of industry leaders and learn their best practices through professional organizations. I think PRSA gives us the chance to see what truly great public relations work looks like through networking and professional recognition.

4. Why did you join WMPRSA?

Since this is my first position in public relations, I look forward to the opportunity to learn from my new peers. I think PRSA will help give me the chance to connect and share resources with the many professional members in my field.

5. If you could have a job anywhere in the world, where and what would it be?

I really enjoy video games, but with a job and family, I don't get the chance to play as often as I'd like. I've always thought it would be interesting to work for a cutting-edge software or video game company and combine one of my hobbies with my professional life. My master's thesis was video game-related and I feel like it's an industry that is constantly growing and changing, despite some obvious public relations challenges; I think I'd like to have a hand in turning that around. Getting to play a game or two at work would just be one of the perks.

6. Name a favorite website and explain why you like it.

I'm a runner and for years have visited mapmyrun.com. There are several resources related to fitness and nutrition, but one of the most obvious is the ability to easily plan a running route and quickly determine its length, down to a fraction of a mile. There is an easy-to-use interactive map. I'm always surprised how many runners don't know about the site and how convenient it is.
