Let me begin 2013 by thanking you for being a part of the West Michigan Public Relations Society of America. Our chapter is focused on serving as your connection to the national organization and seeks to provide you with great opportunities for networking and enrichment right here in West Michigan. The year ahead will feature a new mix of WMPRSA initiatives that will include efforts to connect you with the media and experts in specific practice areas of our industry. We’ll also attempt to provide you with opportunities to give back to our community and profession.
One of our new efforts is called Media + Members. These bring-your-own-lunch events will be free for members and, hopefully, will provide unique perspectives on the many changes within the news media and the needs of reporters who work at specific media outlets. Our first event will be held at Grand Valley State University’s downtown Grand Rapids campus on Thursday, Feb. 7 at noon and will feature Crain’s Detroit Business Publisher Mary Kramer. We hope to see you there.
We’ll also limit our paid luncheon programs in the year ahead. Knowing that we’re all strapped for time, we’ll host these events on a quarterly basis and work to secure in-demand speakers on topics that are important to all of us. Our first speaker will be announced soon.
You’ll also notice several ways to team with WMPRSA in 2013 to give back to our profession and community. Our newly launched mentoring program is one rewarding way to give back in a time-efficient manner. We’ll host a kickoff event on Jan. 22 at 5:15 p.m. in downtown Grand Rapids. Our PRforGood campaign also continues to gain steam following last year’s effort to help our favored charity, Family Promise of Grand Rapids, win a free Toyota Tundra truck. The PRforGood committee recently finalized a strategic plan for Family Promise and is seeking volunteers to support our efforts for this organization.
The programs mentioned above are just a few of the great initiatives that our WMPRSA leadership team is working on to begin the new year. I hope you take advantage of these opportunities and others. Be sure to follow the happenings at wmprsa.org, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. We’ll keep you updated there as well as through periodic emails from me.
