The Diocese of Grand Rapids is seeking a full-time Director of Communications to provide leadership in planning, developing and implementing all diocesan marketing, public relations and internal/external communications strategies and tactics. This position acts as the official spokesperson for the bishop and Diocese of Grand Rapids, has direct oversight and editorial control of FAITH Magazine Grand Rapids, coordinates the diocesan branding and provides public relations, digital communications and crisis management counsel to the diocesan staff, parishes, schools and diocesan agencies.
The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in English, marketing, journalism, public relations or a related field (advanced degree is a plus) and a minimum 5 to 7 years functional experience in communication field. Must be an active Catholic in good standing with a fully supportive and energetic attitude toward the Church.
The position requires knowledge of the Catholic Church including in-depth familiarity with its theology, structures, history and hierarchy. Candidates should possess a comprehensive knowledge of major issues facing the Catholic Church in Michigan, the U.S. and the world. Superior professional writing skills; must be able to present ideas in a cogent, understandable, and compelling manner. Can adjust and respond accordingly on tight deadlines. Excellent oral communications skills for speaking to and interacting with the media and other appropriate interfaces is required. Well-prepared and skilled in dealing with journalists from print, broadcast, or Web-based outlets and experienced in conducting news briefings, wiring news releases, statements, advisories, and doing live interviews. Must be able to maintain confidential information, exercise good judgment and work independently as well in a team environment. Proficiency with information technology including Microsoft Office Suite, social media usage required. Multi-lingual/bi-lingual is desirable.
