By Christie Bender, senior at Ferris State University March marked the 12-year anniversary of Articulate Communications, a company founded by Christine Hoek, a member of the West Michigan Public Relations Society of America.
After graduating from Hope College with a degree in communications, Hoek began working for Aves Advertising in Grand Rapids, Mich. Her first job at the company was in the publishing division, Vitae, working on interior design books from start to finish, including book launches and designer events. After three years, Hoek moved to Aves’ public relations division. Within a year she was promoted to director of public relations.
Straightline Public Relations took hold of Hoek’s public relations skills and hired her in the growing firm as the second team member. Within two years Hoek became director of the firm. She was later made partner.
As Hoek began her family, she was presented with many professional opportunities. One was the chance to begin her own business. Her father had done it, and now it was her turn to follow suit. Thus, Articulate Communications was born.
“The field of public relations has provided me the opportunity to work with many great clients, causes, and people. The work is always fascinating, which makes it very enjoyable,” Hoek said.
With 20 years of experience, a master’s degree in communication, her APR accreditation, and passion for her career, Hoek goes above and beyond for the clients of Articulate Communications. Her work is award winning, having been recognized locally, regionally, and nationally, including PRSA’s top national campaign award – the Silver Anvil. Hoek is also a previous recipient of the PR Practitioner of the Year Award, which is an honor awarded by West Michigan Public Relations Society members. Her public relations experience includes many different industries such as healthcare, technology, office and residential furniture, and nonprofits.
Hoek volunteers her time and holds board positions with Hand2Hand Ministries, Ferris State University’s Communication Department, and the West Michigan Public Relations Society of America.
