Eighth Annual Poynter Kent State Media Ethics Workshop - "Dirty Politics"

Akron Area PRSA is joining with nine other organizations to sponsor the Eighth Annual Poynter Kent State Media Ethics Workshop, titled "Dirty Politics", on Thursday, September 20, 2012, at Kent State's Franklin Hall The focus of this year's workshop will reflect on the significance of fact-checking, polling and anti-gender bias in political reporting. A panel discussion will examine the ethics of political communication from the standpoint of the media and public relations professionals. References to how campaign communications regularly violate the ethics codes of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Public Relations Society of America. Akron Arae PRSA is sponsoring this workshop during PRSA Ethics Month as one of its three ethics program in 2012.

Speakers on the workshop agenda include keynote speaker Connie Schultz, Pulitzer Prize winner, author, TV commentator and former Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist; Bill Adair, founder of PolitiFact; Greg Korte, USA Today reporter; John Green, director, Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics, The University of Akron; and seven other experts in political science, political campaigning and office holders.

The program will host 150 attendees and will draw a national audience thrugh live streaming and mobile devices. Sponsoring groups in addition to Akron Area PRSA include: the Poynter Institute, the Media Law Center for Ethics and Access, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the KSU College of Communication and Information, Kent State TeleProductions, KSU Dept. of Educational Technology, the Akron Beacon Journal, the Civic Commons and the Online News Association.

West Michigan PRSA is pleased to announce an APR Prep "drop-in" day!Have you always wanted to gain Accreditation in Public Relations (APR)? West Michigan PRSA is hosting an APR Prep "drop-in" day on Friday, April 13 from 9:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m. at Ferris State University's downtown Grand Rapids campus in the Applied Technology Center Room 180 (map available here). You can stop by at your convenience, ask questions, learn about the process, and pick up a hard-copy of the APR study guide. WMPRSA 2012 Elections and By-Laws Vote Information

This year WMPRSA has four candidates for its Board, four Executive positions to fill, and a vote on whether or not to approve an updated by-laws document. [A link to the ballot will be emailed to members.]  1. By-Laws Update: A revised draft of WMPRSA by-laws, reflecting suggested language provided by National PRSA and the changing nature of the West Michigan chapter and how it operates, is presented to the WMPRSA membership for approval. If approved by a majority of WMPRSA members, these by-laws also will require PRSA review and approval before going into effect.

2012 Board Candidates

Jennifer Luth, Public Relations Associate, Clark Communications

With six years of public relations, marketing and event production experience, Jennifer has worked for multiple non-profit organizations. Her experience includes Frederik Meijer Gardens where she helped facilitate the Tom Otterness Exhibit, while coordinating multiple public relations events. She also worked as the first Production Assistant for the Summer Concert Series where she accommodated world-renowned musicians and coordinated live performances.

Jennifer was a key component in expanding local non-profit, Mentor 1, as she established and maintained all public relations for the organization, as well as worked with Grand Rapids city leaders to establish Mentor 1 into the West Michigan community.

She has taken her experience to an international level by living and working in Quito, Ecuador. In Quito, she led communications for a large non-profit missions organization called, Youth World. By combining marketing, journalism, photography and public relations, Jennifer introduced the concept and strategy of a communications department within the Youth World.

Bradley Gordon, Marketing & Special Events Coordinator, WGVU Public Media

Bradley Gordon is the Marketing & Special Events Coordinator for WGVU Public Media. A Michigan native, originally from Grosse Ile, Bradley found his permanent address in West Michigan in 2002 after receiving a Bachelors of Science in Film & Video Production from Grand Valley State University and a Masters of Communications in 2008. Bradley joined West Michigan Public Relations Society of American in 2009 and instantaneously joined the Programs Committee. Since joining WMPRSA Bradley has been heavily involved in the organization and has become a Co-Chair of the Programs Committee. Bradley is very much looking forward to the opportunity to serve as a WMPRSA Board Member.

Terri Howe, APR, Owner and Principal of Howe Marketing Communications LLC

Terri Howe, APR, is Owner and Principal of Howe Marketing Communications LLC (HMC), a 14-year-old virtual, full-service advertising and public relations firm located in Grand Rapids, Michigan (Coopersville). HMC specializes in servicing local, regional, national and global business-to-business and consumer accounts and has been recognized with several local and regional advertising and public relations awards. Terri has 27 years experience in the marketing communications field, is a past president of the West Michigan Public Relations Society of America (WMPRSA), is a member and national committee chair of PRSA’s Counselors Academy and has served as an adjunct professor in the School of Communications at Grand Valley State University. Beyond strategic counseling, writing and project/production management expertise, Terri is also a specialist in research construction and methodologies. Terri applies this knowledge to help in brand development, to assist in the strategic planning process and to provide ongoing measurement and evaluation for client’s marketing communications programs. Kristie Burns, Director of Consumer Products, Lambert, Edwards & Associates

Kristie Burns serves as a Director in the Consumer Products practice for Lambert, Edwards & Associates (LE&A), with 15 years of strategic marketing, communications, public relations and special events experience.

Prior to joining LE&A in 2010, Kristie served as a national communications specialist for global accounting firm, Ernst & Young LLP, reporting to firm headquarters in New York. Based in Grand Rapids, Mich., Kristie worked in the Strategic Growth Markets practice and managed marketing and internal and external communications for the following national practice groups: Initial Public Offerings, Cleantech and Venture Capital. She also worked on the planning team for the firm’s largest global event: Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® awards, nationally hosted by late night TV personality, Jay Leno. Other roles held during her nearly 10-year career with Ernst & Young include: Americas Alumni Relations Specialist and West Michigan Marketing and Public Relations Manager.

Kristie also served for more than three years as Marketing and Public Relations Manager for The Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, where she oversaw several exhibit openings, including national traveling Seuss!®, which served nearly 80,000 visitors. In 2001, Kristie received a SABRE Award (The world's largest awards competition for the public relations industry, celebrating PR campaigns that demonstrate the highest levels of creativity, integrity and effectiveness) for her work as part of the Ernst & Young national public relations network: Inside the Mind of a Cyber Criminal: A Media Primer, Professional Services Firms category. Kristie, a graduate of Aquinas College, currently volunteers for Catholic Central High School and St. Stephen School and Parish.

2012 Executive Board Candidates

Nick Wasmiller, Manager of Public Relations, Michigan Blood

Nick Wasmiller is the manager of public relations at Michigan Blood, overseeing the efforts of eight PR professionals across the state. He currently serves as the treasurer of WMPRSA, is the president of the Grand Rapids Jaycees Foundation and an appointed official on the City of Kentwood's compensation commission. Nick previously served as an account supervisor at SeyferthPR, leading the firm's work for a variety of clients including market leaders and startups.

Rick Jensen, Communications Manager, Davenport University

Rick Jensen is the Communications Manager for Davenport University, where he manages internal and external communications for the university’s 14 campuses across the state of Michigan.  Prior to joining Davenport, Rick worked at Seyferth PR as an Account Executive, and at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park as the organization’s Public Relations Specialist.  A Grand Rapids native, Rick studied at Grand Valley State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising and Public Relations in 2005. Rick joined WMPRSA in 2005 and has been a member ever since.  He has a been a member of the WMPRSA Board of Directors since 2009 and has served as the Communications Chair and Secretary.

Anna Bryce, APR, Public Relations Lead, Amway North America Public Relations

As Public Relations Lead for Amway North America, Anna Bryce is responsible for  strategic  public  relations  planning,  primarily  focused on Amway's leading product    brand,   NUTRILITE   nutritional   supplements.   Her responsibilities   include   partnering   with   brand  marketing,  digital marketing,  external  agencies and other company divisions to deliver fully integrated   campaigns   on   message,   on   time  and  on  budget.  Other responsibilities  include media relations, social media content, and issues and crisis communications.  Bryce  joined Amway in 1998. She previously worked in legislative relations for  Western  Michigan  University,  where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree  in  Public Relations and an MBA with a Marketing concentration. She earned her Accreditation in Public Relations in 2002.

The Literacy Center of West Michigan (LCWM) has been the recipient of these services for the past couple of years (read the related article to learn more). Now, it’s another worthy organization’s turn to benefit from some of the best PR minds in West Michigan!
