Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility Statement and Definition.
For West Michigan Public Relations Society of America (WMPRSA), diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility are vital to the success of our chapter, our profession and the communities in which we live and work. Our Chapter pledges to actively work to make this organization as diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible as possible. WMPRSA honors everyone’s unique backgrounds and vows not to discriminate by any of the contexts outlined in the below definitions.
We also aspire to champion diversity in our community efforts and outreach, bringing diverse voices to the table even if they are not represented in WMPRSA membership.
Here is how we define diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility:
Diversity - The most obvious contexts of diversity include race, ethnicity, religion, age, ability, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, country of origin, culture and diversity of thought. However, in a rapidly changing society, diversity continues to evolve and can include class, socioeconomic status, life experiences, learning and working styles, personality types and intellectual traditions and perspectives, in addition to cultural, political, religious and other beliefs. These defining attributes impact how we approach our work, connect with others and move through the world. (PRSA)
Equity – Equity is being fair and impartial. We will not discriminate against others based on our own biases and will strive to unlearn and “check” our biases as much and as often as possible. (Adapted from PRSA Richmond)
Inclusion - Inclusion, according to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), is defined as “the achievement of a work environment in which all individuals are treated fairly and respectfully, have equal access to opportunities and resources, and can contribute fully to the organization’s success.” Inclusion is not just about having that “seat at the table” but is about ensuring everyone’s voice is heard and fully considered. (PRSA)
Accessibility - Accessibility can be described as any person or group who is empowered to use resources, spaces, processes or other key tasks with a similar amount of effort or time regardless of their ability status. We will strive to make opportunities open to people across different backgrounds, including physical and neurological abilities, economic backgrounds, levels of knowledge, and culture including language, race, ethnicity, etc. (Adapted from Inclusive Performance Strategies)
